Top 5 of 2011

I thought I  might do a top 5 list of the games of 2011. I've seen a lot of them online but these are my opinions.
5. Dead Island - I know many people have given it poor reviews and its buggy as hell, but there's a sense of accomplishment when you decapitate 3 zombies with one swing or blow up a mate by shooting a explosive barrel next to them.
4. Lord of the Rings War in the North - This one is on more for it's story. It's good to actually get a new Lord of the Rings story that wasn't shit like The Third Age. Plus it's good to have a new Lord of the Rings game overall as well.
3. Bastion - I'm not one for buying indie games, but I saw a let's play of it and I knew I had to have it. After a few minutes of playing it, my whole perspective on Indie games had changed and it was because of Bastion that  I have started to look more into the Indie game market.
2. Skyrim - While not being the best Elder Scrolls game, it still was good to get back into it's world though. I had a contradictory mind on what Skyrim was going to be like, was it going to be as good as Oblivion of Morrowind or is it going to falter like Fallout: New Vegas. In the end, it was in between those two outcomes. I still loved the game and have put in countless hours into playing it.
1. The Old Republic - Even though I have only been playing it for the past few days, I believe it to be my most favorite game of 2011. I think instead of giving a full explanation, I will give you short one or two word points that describe the awesomeness of this game. Star Wars, Story, Multiplayer, Space Combat, Flashpoints, Group Heroics, Music. And I guess there is one other major point why I love it. Finally we get a sequel to Knights of the Old Republic.

Merry Christmas All

So it's Christmas in my little part of the world and it couldn't have gone better so far. But bloody hell, 16.4gb install for The Old Republic. I guess it's all the sound files.

Early Christmas

Well some of my Christmas presents came early (Well not to early, it is Christmas Eve here) and I finally got A Game of Thrones. YAY READING!

Flash Mob Greatness

So The Old Republic ran a flash "Freeze" mob to help promote the release of the game. Watch a video below.

Greatest Family Guy Scene Ever

Well except for the Star Wars episodes.
Also don't know if any of you noticed this, but YouTube has a special Christmas thing where the dot that goes across the red bar is now a snowflake.

Changes to the Bat-Suit

The infographic is waayyy too big to post on here so I'm just going to link you to it.

Reality Shows Must Die (Rant Vol 2)

Why is it that MTV tries to suck everything that shouldn't be a reality show, like Jersey Shore, and then make copies of that, ruining things for some people. Now MTV are making a reality show about fandom and fanboys, but in a Jersey Shore style manner. To me, that just seems an insult and in the end, those who end up going into it, will probably not be true fanboys/girls. I have seen a surge of people calling themselves "nerds" and "geeks" ever since Big Bang Theory became a hit. I know personally some of these people, and to be honest, it sickens me that our way of life is in danger because some Hollywood executive wants more money in their already filled pocket. How about instead of making shit reality shows that will even ruin us more, create a channel that brings back all the lost TV shows, maybe even bringing them back into creation. And I know there's one on the tip of all of our tongues that would be the front runner for a new station like this... Firefly. Instead of wasting money on something that will only entertain the few people who think they're true nerds or geeks (even though they most likely picked on us in some way earlier in their lives), and actually give back to the people whose lives you're making a mockery of and give us the television shows we want, we're a big enough demographic to earn you that extra money you want, so why not?

Top 10 YouTube Channels of 2011

So it's come out which of the channels on YouTube got the most views over 2011. The winners are...

01.   Machinima (video games) http://www.youtube.com/machinima
02.   IGNentertainment (video games) http://www.youtube.com/ignentertainment
03.   RayWilliamJohnson (comedy) http://www.youtube.com/raywilliamjohnson
04.   expertvillage (how to/advice) http://www.youtube.com/expertvillage
05.   BlueXephos (gaming) http://www.youtube.com/bluexephos
06.   smosh (comedy) http://www.youtube.com/smosh
07.   realannoyingorange (comedy) http://www.youtube.com/realannoyingorange
08.   roosterteeth (comedy) http://www.youtube.com/roosterteeth
09.   thelonelyisland (musical comedy) http://www.youtube.com/thelonelyisland
10.   barelypolitical (comedy) http://www.youtube.com/barelypolitical

The funny thing with this, is that I only watch 2 of those channels (Blue Xephos and Roosterteeth). I know some people love the other ones like RayWilliamJohnson and Smosh, but I just can't stand them. I do watch Expert Village from time to time, usually watching comic and drawing tutorials.

Freemium game you should play

You should all check out Shadow Era, a CCG (Combat Card Game). It's a lot like the WoW one. For those who don't know what "Freemium" is, it is a game which is free to play but to actually get somewhere in it, you have to pay to buy booster packs.
Check it out at this website.... http://www.shadowera.com/

Hobbit Trailer

Watch it here... NOW
http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/wb/thehobbit/

Sadness for the geek community

It's really sad when you find that Twilight has a fanbase larger than Star Wars, Doctor Who, Star Trek and Pokemon combined. Fuck You Twilight. Fuck You Stephanie Meyer, especially since you ruined vampires.

This is why we have Christmas

Steam Sale and Competition

You all should go on Steam and check out the sale that's on at the moment. That thing is brilliant. Also there is a competition going on that first prize is, wait for it...... EVERY SINGLE STEAM GAME THERE IS!!!!!
Seriously. Every single one. Go to Steam NOW!

I can't believe I'm doing this

I'm actually going to load up WoW to get back into the MMO style gaming ready for TOR.

Batman Trailer

All I can say is YAY. Go have a look for yourselves here.

New Shooter IP

So it seems 2K is trying to get into the modern shooter industry and take on games like Call of Duty and Battlefield, and all I can say is if this trailer is foreshadowing what's to come, I think it may actually be able to fit in among those titles, but hey, that's what I said about Homefront and look where that ended up. (Bargain Bins FYI). Anyways, here's the trailer for it... It's called Spec Ops: The Line

Pure Awesomeness

So I was looking into some The Old Republic videos since it's only going to be 6 more sleeps till I get it, and I found this video. I am ecstatic to find out that there are not just small links but BIG links to the original Knights of the Old Republic. Have a look at this below....

You may shed a tear of geekyness

The moment when you realise Jar Jar got more screen time than Boba Fett. It just isn't right.

So it finally happened...

Kim Jong Il is dead. That is all.

Custom Mandalorian 1

So I finished the first step of the Mandalorian helmet and have made it in cardstock. I only have one crummy webcam pic as my camera is broken atm but here is a first glimpse into what is to come.
It does look a bit warped and mangy in the pic, but it will be a lot different once it has had resin, fiberglass and body filler put on it for strength and details. I'm still looking into the means of making a cheap visor, so if anyone has some info on the just comment below.

I found them all....

...but as soon as I looked away I forgot where they were.

Christmas Time

You know what's great about Christmas time. All the holiday specials of all the TV shows. So far I've seen the Warehouse 13 one, the Eureka one and the Simpsons one and all I can say is they are usually my favorite episodes in a season (well except for Warehouse 13's season 3 finale, that was AMAZING!!!!)

Ezio walks the dinosaur.

Here, take all my money.

Well it seems like LEGO are now going to make Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Lego sets. Hopefully this will include some really big sets of Minas Tirith, Helms Deep and Orthanc. On the other hand it may also lead to a Lego Lord of the Rings video game, while most people see the Lego games as a childrens game, I find them quite fun and entertaining. The Lego sets will be on shelves as of June 2012.

Sorry

Sorry for not posting the last couple of days, been really busy for me. I have started the Boba Fett helmet I mentioned earlier and it should be all glued together within the next few days. It probably won't get past the paper stage till after xmas, but I should have the funds to finally pick up a dremel to help me with the detailing.

Fett-ish

A-ha a pun. I like puns. Gonna pick up some supplies tomorrow to start work on making a custom mandalorian helmet. (That's a custom Boba Fett helmet to all you non Star Wars geeks, and if you don't know who Boba Fett is.....Shame on you). I'm going to be using what is known as pepakura, a program where you can print out practically a net of a 3d object, in which I have the base of a Mandalorian Helmet. Should have pics within the next few days of the started work, that is if I start in the next few days.

Song in my Head 1

Goddamn music and it's catchy jingles and lyrics, why can't you stay out of my head.

Holy Shit!

If only they sold the Ark of the Covenant.
UPDATE: Well Fuck Look's like they do

Star Trek Guest Stars

So I just came across this picture of a bunch of famous people who had bit parts in Star Trek episodes. My only question, why bother put any make-up on Iggy Pop, he looks like an alien without it anyway.

11 Functional TARDIS's

Have a look at this link. Some pretty cool TARDIS's if I say so.http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/109302

Technorati Claim

This post is just to show that I am the author of this blog for the people at Technorati so I can be found through their site.

Living in Middle Earth

So someone is making a cook book inspired by the foods of Middle Earth. If it's Lembas Bread recipe doesn't fill a grown man's hunger in one bite, I will be most disappointed.
Read more on this at http://eater.com/archives/2011/12/06/lord-of-the-rings-scholar-to-write-hobbit-cookbook.php

Movie Recommendation of the Day

So I just saw Batman Year One. It's such an amazing storytelling of what I believe to be one of Frank Miller's best. To summarize the plot, it's the first year of both Batman and Lt. Gordon being in Gotham and shows both of their troubles leading them to become who they are in Batman Canon. One of my favorites so far out of my DC Universe Blu Ray pack. Next one to watch - Superman/Batman Apocalypse.

Website You Should Visit

A website that I spend quite a lot of time on is The Replica Prop Forum. There you can find hundreds of people showcasing the props and costumes that they have made and how they made them. If you're like me and are always craving some sort of way to be creative, this is a fun way to be so. You will probably find me talking about this site in posts to come.

Retro Game of the Day

One game I've been playing a lot of recently is OpenTTD (aka Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe). It's a free remake of the 1995 Transport Tycoon Deluxe which you can download at this site. http://www.openttd.org/en/
Now you may be thinking why do I want to play a game where I just control trains, trucks and buses. Well that's what I thought at first, but it is actually quite fun and you get the hang of it rather quickly. It reminds me a lot of the old Sim City 2000, which in my nostalgia is one of my favorite games.

BEEEEEER IIIIINNNNN SPPAAAAAACEEE

Mind that most people won't get the Pigs in Space reference from my title but scientists have found a cloud of ethyl alcohol in space 1,000 times the diameter of our solar system that would make an estimated 400 trillion trillion pints of beer. Somewhere out there, there is a whole alien species having the biggest party in the whole universe.

Game of Thrones Season 2

Can't wait for it. Here's a trailer for the new season.

Hot off the press!

A little rumor going around the interwebs at this moment is saying there's going to be yet another villain in The Dark Knight Rises. Supposedly an 8 year old girl was supposed to be playing a young Talia al Ghul but then refused the role when she found out she would have to shave her head. This little news bit has lead onto a bigger rumor that Marion Cotillard who at this time is supposed to be playing "Miranda Tate" a Wayne Enterprises Exec. is actually going to be playing Talia al Ghul. This doesn't surprise me as they did announce quite a while ago that Liam  Neeson was going to be in it again, even if it is just flashback scenes.
To finish off I leave you with the most recent poster for TDKR.

To capture or not to capture, that is the question.

Might be getting a capture device in the near future so I might be uploading gaming videos to my YouTube account which I'll then embed on here. Don't know what kind of videos I should do. Should I make walkthroughs, let's plays and stuff like that or Achievement guides and easter eggs. Comment below on your thoughts. Over and out.

12 Days of Nerdmas Day 1

Since it's 12 days till Christmas (Well where I am), I'm going to write a 12 Days of Christmas song, but with a twist.
On the first day of Nerdmas, my WoW guild gave to me a gaming rig and a server rack.

DLC Alert

Back to Karkand comes out tomorrow. Guess I'm going to have to stop my retro gaming spree and start playing Battlefield 3 again, just as I start playing Knights of the Old Republic 2 again. On a separate note, comment below about anything to do with The Old Republic, which comes out in a week. Well for most of the world, not in the place I call home, New Zealand. We've been screwed over and won't get it till Feb or March. But I don't care. I'm buying it online so I can get it before Christmas. Expect loads of posts about it after Christmas.Over and Out.

Random Star Wars Info 1

Being a huge Star Wars nerd has it's ups and downs. One up is knowing a lot about the Expanded Universe and backstories. I have decided that I will disperse this knowledge through posts over the course of time. For my first post in this series, I will talk about one of the more common EU Storylines, The story of Jacen and Jaina Solo. They are the twin children of Han Solo and Leia Organa Solo. Both were born force sensitive and end up learning to become Jedi. They have quite a few adventures together for most of their lives until a turning point. About 30-40 years after the fall of the Empire there was a war known as the Yuuzhan Vong War and during this war Jacen and Jaina's younger brother Anakin Solo was killed. This caused Jacen to become ridden with emotions and start to fall to the dark side. He then became known as Darth Caedus. Jaina learnt ways to kill Jacen, now Darth Caedus, by being taught my the most badass bounty hunter ever, Boba Fett (Who I will talk about in the next post). They end up in a duel which ends with Jaina plunging her lightsaber into her brother's heart. This in turn ends the war.
Well I hoped you all liked my first Star Wars info post, and hopefully there will be more to come.

Christmas Giving

Please people, share the magic of Christmas and buy a goat.http://www.justgiving.com/yogscast/

Rant Vol.1

I have realized that I haven't let out the beast within and had my rant about the Video Game Awards from yesterday. First of all I can see that whoever decides the winners, is extremely influenced by fanboyism. It was all good until I read that Modern Warfare beat Battlefield. Now really looking at in terms of quality of the games taking out the factor of previous fanboyism, Battlefield 3 is the superior game whereas Modern Warfare 3 would more suit the DLC award since really that's all it feels like is DLC for Modern Warfare 2. Then there's Best Indie Game. I know I'm going to end up in a huge shit storm for this (pardon my vulgar language) but Minecraft isn't deserving for that award, especially when put up against a game like Bastion. Yes Minecraft is popular, yes Minecraft is fun to play, yes Minecraft is somewhat original but in my eyes Bastion is more original, more fun, less repetitive and definitely more deserving of the award. Bastion had a brilliant art design behind it, with it's beauty being up there with Trine 2 and Skyrim. It also had a very innovative way to tell the story, Minecraft doesn't even have a story. Glad to see Bastion at least got best downloadable game. My last part of the rant is about the best graphics award. What does that even mean? Are we talking about the beauty of the game, the innovatory of the graphics used, or just best improvement from it's previous game? None of the nominees deserved it, and if any out of them should've won, it should have been L.A. Noire as it brought the technology of motion capture faces into video games. C'mon you know the graphics were good when you could easily pick out that it was the guy out of heroes, or it was Walter (John Noble). But seriously there were some other games more deserving of at least being nominated for Best Graphics. Trine 2, Bastion and Skyrim are just a few examples of this year that were deserving of it. End of rant.

Movie Recommendation of the Day

Saw Green Lantern: Emerald Knights today. For not being the biggest Green Lantern fan out there (Viva La Batman) I have to say it's pretty good. Mainly watched it since Nathan Fillion played Hal Jordan but hey, it surpassed my expectations and I actually enjoyed it. Some bits were kinda ridonkulous *SPOILER ALERT* like how there is a living planet green lantern *SPOILER END* It isn't confusing for people who aren't knowledgeable about the Green Lantern Corps as it does give plenty of  back story in the form of tales told by Nathan Fillion. While I'm at it talking about Fillion, ALL OF YOU GO OUT AND WATCH FIREFLY AND SERENITY. It is one of the greatest TV shows ever made and one of Fox's biggest mistakes by cancelling it by the first season. Over and Out.

Salutations Folk of the Interwebs

So being the creative chap I am who always has to be doing something either creative or nerdy at every minute of his waking life, I have decided to start this blog. Now as this is a first post, I realize I must give an introduction about me. My name's Harrison, I'm a college student (High School student for you international folks) from New Zealand.  On this blog I will discuss events happening in my life, random bits of nerdy news here or there and just general bloggy kind of things. Most likely you will read my ramblings about the Firefly cancellation or the newest episode of Doctor Who. Well I guess that sums it all up. Need to figure out a witty way to close this first post. Live long and prosper? Nah. May the Force be with you always.... Taken. Umm lets see.... I guess I could end it with one last bit of info on me. I'm the goddamn BATMAN!!!!!!!!!!
